Dhaka: A Megacity of Resilience and Growth
Dhaka, the vibrant capital of Bangladesh, stands as one of the most dynamic urban centers in South Asia. A city shaped by resilience, innovation, and cultural diversity, Dhaka represents the aspirations of millions seeking opportunity, security, and a better future.
With an estimated metropolitan population of around 21 million people as of 2020, the city is home to nearly 11% of the country’s total population, according to data from United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF, March 2024). This remarkable concentration of people highlights Dhaka’s role as the economic, cultural, and administrative heartbeat of the nation.
The Plight of Bangladesh's Street Children
Every morning, Dhaka awakens to the energy of millions striving for a better life. The city’s streets quickly fill with workers, families, and newcomers arriving from different parts of Bangladesh in search of opportunity, stability, and the hope of securing at least two daily meals. Amid this constant movement and aspiration, however, there is a vulnerable group whose struggles often remain unseen street-connected children.
Helping Today. Helping Tomorrow
Children living on the streets should not be seen as a burden to society. Instead, they hold immense potential to become active, capable, and valuable contributors to the nation’s future if they are given the right opportunities, care, and support.
Since 2000, Local Education and Economic Development Organization (LEEDO), a non-profit and nongovernmental development organization based in Dhaka, has been working tirelessly to transform the lives of street-connected children across Bangladesh. Through dedicated community-based interventions, LEEDO strives to provide vulnerable children with protection, education, rehabilitation, and pathways toward a dignified future.
Hamza Choudhury - an Ambassador of LEEDO
Hamza Choudhury, professional footballer and proud British-Bangladeshi, has joined Local Education and Economic Development Organization (LEEDO) as an Ambassador, lending his voice and support to the organization’s mission to transform the lives of street-connected children in Dhaka and across Bangladesh.

“প্রিয় বন্ধুরা, তোমরাই বন্ধু, কারণ তোমরা আমাদের একা ছেড়ে দাওনি, অশান্ত এই পৃথিবীতে শান্তির ঘর দিয়েছো। আমি এই লেখাটি সকল শিশুদের পক্ষ থেকে লিখছি, হৃদয়ের গহীন হতে কৃতজ্ঞতা আর ভালবাসা”।
